What makes web
shopping safe?
When websites process orders many
will use a technology called SSL (Secure Socket Layer) that encrypts
your credit card information that you send over the Internet. This
means that your credit card information is encoded so that no one
else will see your credit card information besides you and the merchant.
There is also a different security,
called Secure Electronic Transaction,
or SET, which works on different
principles. SET and SSL technologies
are designed to make your connection
secure.
Am I shopping at a Safe Site?
1) You can look at the web address
on the page where it asks for your
credit card information. If the page
begins with "HTTPS://" instead
of "HTTP://";
then this technology is in place.
This will be true no matter what
web browser you are using.
2) You can check in the Bottom Status Bar of your Web Browser
to see that it is using security
software. This is most often represented
by a Padlock image. The image will usually be found
on the right-hand side of the status
bar. Below are images for two of
the most common browsers, Internet
Explorer and Netscape
Navigator.
Make sure that the Padlock is in
the Locked position.

Explorer |
Netscape
Navigator |

Note: In older versions of Netscape
Navigator (ver 3 or lower), there
will be a Key instead
of a Padlock.
When you are on the page
of the website where it asks for
your credit card number (during
the checkout process), this page
should ALWAYS be secure. If it’s
not secure, do not proceed any
further with the checkout process
and notify the website, so they
may
fix the
problem.
You
may choose, instead, to call them
to complete your order.
Other
Purchasing Options
If
you don't feel comfortable using
the Internet to make purchases,
you may always call the company.
Many merchants allow orders to
be made over the phone. If you
choose this method, make sure
you take notes about the call,
such as time, date, items ordered,
order number and with whom you
spoke. You will want that information
in case you ever have any questions
or concerns with your order.
That same information is usually
included in a confirmation email
if you order online.
Pay Safely
The safest way to pay for any items
is with a credit card. Why? Well,
credit card purchases are protected
and your personal liability is
limited to $50 if someone uses
your credit card without your authorization.
Debit Cards and Checks don't have
the same protection. Your credit
card company may even offer some
additional protection as part of
their services.
Protect
Yourself
No matter which option you choose,
always be safe by doing some simple
things to protect yourself.
- Always check your billing statements
to make sure no one has been using
your credit card without your knowledge.
If you notice anything that seems
wrong, notify your credit card
company immediately.
- Be careful when responding
to email requests for your
password, credit card
information, social security number
or other sensitive information.
If you have any questions about
the
authenticity
of a request,
contact the company directly to
make sure the request truly came
from them. There are scam artists
that send emails and letters that
look official, but really are just
cleverly disguised.
- Be careful of any emails you
receive with an attachment. Attachments
that end in .EXE or .PIF, as
well as some others may be Viruses.
Some viruses may cause damage
to your computer or destroy files.
Some can even be used to allow
access to your computer. When
in doubt, throw it out! Also,
make sure you have Virus Protection
software, and keep it up to date.
